Lookout

Quickstart

Install Lookout on supported Linux VMs through the guided Setup flow.

Lookout installs security monitoring on the Linux VMs you authorize within one private network. Before you begin, confirm that your systems meet the compatible environment requirements.

Start installation

How installation works

Start Setup

Open Lookout Setup, sign in, and copy the Setup instructions into your coding agent.

Install the workstation CLI

The agent downloads the official CLI installer to a temporary file and runs it without sudo. The installer verifies the pinned release checksum, installs the CLI for the current user, and runs lookout version to confirm it is available.

Choose the network and VMs

The agent asks which private network to monitor, discovers running Linux VMs through your authenticated provider CLIs, and asks which VMs you want to protect.

Verify access

The agent confirms each SSH host identity and administrative access to every selected VM before installation begins.

Run the installer

The agent configures the workstation CLI with each VM's private address and, when needed, its existing SSH-config host. You run lookout login and authenticate in your browser. After login, the agent runs lookout install while Lookout deploys and verifies the selected VMs.

Confirm completion

Installation is complete only when the CLI reports success and the selected VMs appear in the Lookout Console.

Keep the installer running

Keep the coding agent and terminal running until lookout install reports success.

Authentication and retries

Authentication is performed only by you through lookout login. The coding agent does not receive your password or browser session. The CLI receives a short-lived permission that can create one deployment.

The CLI installer is available at https://app.devlookout.com/cli/install.sh for macOS and Linux and https://app.devlookout.com/cli/install.ps1 for Windows. It installs for the current user and verifies the pinned workstation artifact before executing it. Do not run it with administrator privileges.

  • Run lookout diagnose to inspect an installation failure.
  • Fix the reported access or installation problem.
  • Run lookout install --retry. The CLI resumes a saved deployment when possible and otherwise starts a new installation attempt.

If a blocker remains, run lookout report, complete the private survey file it creates, then run lookout report submit SURVEY_FILE. The CLI uses the existing short-lived login permission to link the report to your account. It scans the survey locally for secrets before submission. No separate support token is required.

Source-checkout installer

The workstation CLI is the supported account-linked setup flow. From an authorized source checkout, the local installer remains available for development:

./install.sh

Use the CLI for SaaS setup

The source-checkout installer does not perform the browser login flow described above.

Common installation errors

ErrorWhy it happensWhat to do
Installation permission is missing or expiredLogin was not completed or its short-lived permission expired.Run lookout login personally, then retry.
Needs accessA cloud CLI is not authenticated, VM management permissions are missing, or noninteractive sudo is unavailable.Grant only the requested minimum access, then run lookout install --retry.
VM not foundDiscovery did not cover every account, project, subscription, region, or zone.Confirm the authenticated scope of each cloud CLI, then search again.
Release preflight failedThe checksum, archive layout, runtime, systemd environment, or required commands are incompatible. The existing installation is not removed. Fix the reported problem, then run lookout install --retry.
Installation interruptedThe terminal, network connection, or permission flow was interrupted.Run lookout diagnose, fix the problem, then run lookout install --retry.
VM not visible in ConsoleA service, heartbeat, or Console snapshot did not complete successfully.Check the visible service status, then select Try again.
HTTP 400 or 409The control-plane state, approved scope, or snapshot sequence regressed.Select Try again to create a support ticket.

Get help

Run lookout diagnose and retry first. Selecting Try again creates a support ticket. If the blocker remains, use lookout report immediately. Do not wait for installation to succeed. Lookout support will contact the account owner from support@devlookout.com.

For guided troubleshooting, connect your coding agent to the Lookout Support AI Agent.

  1. Sign in to Lookout Settings and find Support AI.
  2. Review the Support MCP setup preview, then click the copy button under the Support MCP setup preview.
  3. Paste the setup into a trusted local coding agent.
  4. The agent configures https://app.devlookout.com/support/mcp as a Streamable HTTP MCP server with Bearer token authentication.
  5. The agent does not run OAuth login because this server does not support OAuth.
  6. The agent verifies that the server exposes ask_lookout_support and check_lookout_support.

The setup copied from Settings includes your secret Support token. Paste it only into a trusted local coding agent, never into agent chat, source control, command history, URLs, or logs. The Lookout Support MCP uses Bearer token authentication, not OAuth. Do not run an OAuth login for this server. A request without the Support token returns HTTP 401, which is expected.

The connection steps below are safe to copy, but they do not contain your token. Use the copy button under the Support MCP setup preview in Settings for the one-paste connection setup.

Keep credentials private

Lookout support will never ask for your installation permission, password, private key, or other credentials. Never send these values in email, chat, URLs, source control, logs, or a support ticket.
